Opening an umbrella heedlessly could easily knock something fragile from a shelf or break dishes. You can click on your sim and force them to use the umbrella or if theyre using the umbrella you can tell them to close it.

The process can be slow and quite frustrating but you will eventually manage to reach your destination. Patio umbrella fabric is designed to resist fade caused by sunlight. Not with your feet facing forward but facing sideways taking tiny penguin-like steps.

Umbrellas were used to block the sun so this then insulted the gods of the sun if you opened them where the sun was not. Finding the exact origin of a superstition is not really easy because people start believing them from their childhood and no one really asks where it came from. Decorating the inside of the home with an open umbrella brings terrible rain and the only way to stop it is to close the umbrella.
